I Don't Want To Be Like My Momma
“Mom what are you doing today?” I asked my mom. “Oh you know baby the usual” said my mom. “But I thought you and my new daddy were taking me to Jams Skating Rink.” I replied. “I m sorry, but something came up and I’ll see you when I get back Okay Daejah,” was the last I ever heard from my mom. I was 14 years old and I was left to fend for my own self. We lived in a small house on Sheldon Street. I was an only child who had a mother that is on drugs, and brings home different men every night whom she tells me is my father. Every day I had a new daddy. My mother would always leave the house to go to get high, but this time she never came back. Watching my mother degrade herself like that just tore me up me inside. Every night I prayed that my mother would just stop using drugs and get herself together. But it just wouldn’t happen. I always said that I would never get like my mother but unfortunately it all took place.
It was about two weeks after my mother disappeared. I was in the house fixing myself a cup of noodles when someone knocked on the door. “Who is it?” I yelled. He replied, “Its Nasir is your mother here?” So I opened up the door and said “No she’s not, she hasn’t been here for two weeks.” Nasir gave me a sly grin and asked could he use the bathroom. I said sure, only because he knew my mother. I showed him to the bathroom and went back to fixing my noodles. Then all of a sudden Nasir was behind me. He asked me “Do you do crack like your mother?” That’s when I began to get suspicious, and I said “No, I would never want to be like her.” “Oh really,” said Nasir as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small bag of white stuff. “What’s that?” I asked. “Its just some salt, I think your noodles might need some” said Nasir. “No thank you I would prefer not to put any more salt in my noodle, they’re salty enough.” I said as walked into the living room with Nasir close behind.
As I got comfortable on the couch I asked Nasir “Has my momma invited you here before?” He told me that they used to get high together. I was disgraced and told him to get out. He refused and began to kiss her. She like the attention but she knew what he was doing wasn’t right. I pushed him away and out of no where I started crying. I told him “I don’t want to be like my momma, I want to be better then her. I don’t want to follow her footsteps.” All he did was hold me until I was done crying. “ I feel bad for what I just attempted to do, but if there is anything I can do to help give me a call.” said Nasir as he gave me his number and walked away. From that day on out Nasir was the father that I always wanted. He cared for me better then anybody could ever do, including my mom. He did his best to make sure that I didn’t live the lifestyle as my mom did. But not only was he a help to me but I also helped him come clean and stop using drugs to. He also helped me find my mom but when I spoke two words to her she didn’t even know who I was and that hurt me so deep inside. Nasir was the only person I had as a teenager and I am very thankful for him. But most of all Im glad that he didn’t let me end up being like my momma. It is because of Nasir that I went on to college and got my Degree as a Social Worker so that I can help others that are in need and went through things like I did.
